Is there anything better than holidaying in a camper truck? OK, so we’re not exactly impartial, but we don’t think so.

Holidaying in a camper is one of the best ways to explore off the beaten track, discover hidden parts of the UK and get up close with nature.

One day you could be waking up surrounded by wild moorland and craggy hills. The next, stepping out of your van or truck onto a deserted beach with only birds for company.

With a camper truck, you’ve got the freedom to design your own perfect holiday itinerary and adventure further off grid. Just add a demountable  camper to your pick up and off you go.

Making a detour to visit a hidden waterfall or staying longer at that moorland hiking spot is all part of the fun.

And with a comfy bed, a bathroom, heating and seating, , you’ve got everything you need to make wherever you stop your home.

Before you head off on your epic adventure, though, there are a few rules to be aware of.

What are the 'wild' camping basics?

Whether you’re hiring a camper truck, considering buying a demountable camper for your pick up, or are lucky enough to own your own campervan or motorhome, quite rightly,  you can’t just park up and camp in any beautiful location that takes your fancy.

Lots of people use apps like Park4Night, which, without the landowner’s permission, is classed as trespassing. You’ll usually be asked to leave (or be subject to locals driving by fast to shake your van and honk to wake you.

I’d also like to highlight that any of my hire customers caught doing something they shouldn’t be, have £100 of their deposit donated to charity.

If you want to get off grid and wild camp in a truck camper or campervan, then, here’s what you need to know.

By the way, there are nuances in language with ‘wild camping’ in a vehicle. Purists say it’s not wild camping, and they’re right. That’s under canvas.

I think wild camping in a vehicle is called ‘fly camping’. Likewise, landowners are very sensitive to use that phase so as not to encourage a free for all. Quite right. We’d all feel like that if we were in their shoes.

Thing is, ‘wild camping’ is the phrase people search on Google, so I'm sticking with it here so this website is found by people doing it - so I can help spread the word as to how to do it properly.

And respectfully.

And legally.

What is wild camping and can I do it in a camper truck or campervan?

Wild camping is camping anywhere other than a designated campsite. This means you won’t have access to facilities like waste disposal and electricity.

Most people choose a scenic location like a forest or field so they can feel close to nature and enjoy being away from noise and other people. Wild camping also has the advantage of being free of charge.

But unfortunately, in many parts of the UK, it’s not legal.

There are still ways you can camp off grid in the UK though, you just need to know where to look.

What are the rules about wild camping in a vehicle in the UK?

England, Wales and Northern Ireland

While it’s a civil offence rather than a criminal one, without permission from the landowner, wild camping is prohibited in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The same rules apply whether you’re in a tent, campervan, motorhome or other camping vehicle.

However, Dartmoor is an exception. If you carry all your kit, you can camp for one or two nights in certain areas of the National Park. But this only applies to small tents. Large tents, vehicles, campervans and motorhomes are not permitted to wild camp or stay overnight.

Scotland

Unlike England and Wales, wild camping in a tent is permitted in most parts of Scotland – as long as you act responsibly, respect wildlife and leave no trace.

This applies to open areas including forests, beaches, rivers, lochs and national parks.

Unfortunately, though, the rules don’t apply to campervans, camper trucks and motorhomes.

But there are cool options like Forestry and Land Scotland’s map of suitable places you can pay to stay at.

How can I wild camp legally in my camper truck?

If you want to camp off grid in your vehicle, you’ll need to know where you can stay with permission. Like I say, Park4Night has lots of options, but laybys and car parks aren’t fun. Or wild. And since you’re in a 4x4, you want to go deeper off grid.

One of the best ways then, is to find a website that’s already done the hard work for you.

One of our favourites is Off Grid Camp. Created by passionate adventurers, it’s a network of off-grid locations across the UK, where you can pay the landowner to stay in your 4x4 camper.

Camping spaces range from rolling fields and farmland to secluded woodland and the banks of remote lochs.

And if you’re a Wild Camper Truck hire customer, you can get discounted access to the Off Grid Camp website. Purchasing customers get a year’s free subscription.

When you hire a Wild Camper Truck from our Scotland or Lake District you can get discounted access to the Off Grid Camp website if you buy a demountable camper for your pick up truck, we’ll give you a year’s free membership.

Usually priced at £25 a year, membership means you can browse and book more than 165+ off grid camping locations across the UK.

What to consider when taking a campervan off grid

When you’re camping off grid, there are a few basic things to remember to ensure you have the best possible stay.

  • Most off-grid locations and wild camping spots won’t have any of the facilities you’d get at a traditional campsite, like electricity and running water. So go prepared – and take a head torch.
  • Proper off-grid will need a 4x4, like a camper truck
  • Leave no trace – respect the countryside and leave it as you found it. Take any rubbish or waste with you, don’t feed wildlife and leave plants untouched.
  • Don’t have campfires – without the permission of landowners and only in designated raised fire pits to ensure you leave no trace.
  • Be considerate to landowners, locals and any other campers you might meet.
  • Dispose of your waste water at designated areas. Local councils in popular tourist areas often provide waste disposal points as do some service stations. Some official campsites will also let off-grid campers dispose of waste for a small fee. Park4Night is a good source of those locations.
